Maria Elena Velasco was a renowned Mexican actress and director, born on December 17, 1940, in Puebla, Mexico. She is best known for creating and portraying the beloved character La India Maria. This iconic character appeared in 16 films and the TV series Ay Maria Que Punteria.
Before gaining fame, she had her first uncredited role in the 1962 Mexican film Ruletero a toda marcha. In addition to her acting career, she also directed films.
Notably, Velasco played a dance instructor in the 2004 film Huapango. She was married to Julian de Meriche with whom she had two children. Additionally, she had three siblings.
