About Maria Edgeworth
Maria Edgeworth was an esteemed English-Irish author known for her contributions to both children’s and adult literature. She was born in Oxfordshire, England on January 1, 1767 and is best remembered for works such as The Parent’s Assistant (1796) and Practical Education (1798).
After attending school in London until 1781, Edgeworth suffered from an eye infection that nearly cost her eyesight. Following this, she received tutoring from her father while also aiding him in managing the family estate in Edgeworthtown, Ireland.
She became a prominent figure in European literature and held views on education and politics similar to those of David Ricardo and Sir Walter Scott.
Edgeworth came from a large family; she was born to Anna Maria Elers and Richard Lovell Edgeworth. Her father had been married four times and had a total of twenty-two children, only some of whom were full siblings to Maria.
