About Mari Sandoz
Mari Sandoz (born May 11, 1896 in Hay Springs, Nebraska) was an American novelist, biographer, and teacher known for her extensive writings on pioneer life and the Plains Indians.
Before gaining recognition as a writer, Sandoz took the rural teachers’ exam and taught in country schools. She later worked for the Nebraska State Historical Society.
Her notable works include novels such as “Cheyenne Autumn,” “The Beaver Men,” “Slogum House,” and “Old Jules.” In 1942, she published a biography of Crazy Horse, the famous Lakota tribal leader.
Sandoz was born to Swiss immigrant parents in Nebraska along with her five siblings. She was briefly married to Wray Macumber.
