About Margarete Schutte-Lihotzky
Margarete Schutte-Lihotzky was the first female Austrian architect, known for her groundbreaking design of the Frankfurt Kitchen, which served as a prototype for modern built-in kitchens and continued to influence kitchen designs long after her death.
Schutte-Lihotzky was born on January 23, 1897 in Austria. She was raised in a family that held open-minded social and political views, including pacifism.
She became the first female student at the University of Applied Arts Vienna where she studied under Josef Hoffmann, Anton Hanak, and Oskar Kokoschka. Her talent shone through as her designs began to win awards while studying with Oskar Strnad.
In 1926, she was enlisted by Frankfurt architect and city planner Ernst May to contribute to the New Frankfurt project. Schutte-Lihotzky also married William Schutte during this time.<
Her legacy lives on through her contributions to architecture and kitchen design.
