Margaret Thatcher was born on October 13, 1925, in Grantham, England. She is known for her role as a world leader and for leading the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. Thatcher made history by becoming the country’s first female Prime Minister, serving from 1979 to 1990.
Before entering politics, she pursued a career in chemistry but later transitioned into public service and earned the moniker “Iron Lady” due to her steadfast political convictions. During her formative years, she participated in various activities such as field hockey, poetry, swimming and music while attending grammar school and being active at Finkin Street Methodist Church.
Thatcher’s time in office was characterized by significant economic deregulation and the privatization of state-owned companies. Her father Alfred Roberts served as Mayor of Grantham.
