About Margaret Murie
Margaret Murie, born on August 18th, 1902 in Seattle, Washington, was a renowned memoirist and known as the Grandmother of the Conservation Movement. Her efforts included helping pass the Wilderness Act and creating the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In 1962, she published her memoir “Two in the Far North” and later became the subject of a documentary film entitled “Arctic Dance”.
Prior to gaining fame for her conservation work, Murie began campaigning to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in 1956. She recruited a supreme court justice to persuade President Eisenhower to close off development of that land.
Notably, Murie received both the Audubon Medal and John Muir Award for her contributions to conservation. Margaret married Olaus Murie who was also a fellow naturalist and conservationist after moving with her family from Seattle to Alaska at five years old.
