About Margaret Mitchell

Margaret Mitchell was born on November 8, 1900, in Atlanta, Georgia. She was a novelist best known for her bestselling novel, Gone with the Wind, which received both a National Book Award and a Pulitzer Prize. The novel was later adapted into a critically acclaimed film in 1939 starring Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara and Clark Gable as Rhett Butler.

Before gaining fame as an author, Mitchell had an interesting early life. When she was three years old, her dress caught on fire leading her mother to dress her in boys’ pants and earning her the nickname “Jimmy.” During her adolescent years, she wrote a novella called Lost Laysen which was published nearly a century after it was written.

Despite only having one book published during her lifetime, it won Mitchell the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937.

Mitchell grew up in Atlanta as the daughter of suffragist Mary Isabel Stephens and attorney Eugene Muse Mitchell. She briefly married Berrien K. Upshaw before meeting John R. Marsh who would become her second husband; they did not have any children.
