About Margaret Mahy
Margaret Mahy was a New Zealand young adult author, born on March 21, 1936. She is well-known for her Carnegie Medal-winning books, The Changeover and The Haunting. Additionally, Mahy wrote the classic works The Man Whose Mother was a Pirate and A Lion in the Meadow which have been widely translated.
Before gaining fame as an author, Mahy studied at Auckland University College and Canterbury University College. She then pursued a career as a librarian and became the head Children’s Librarian at the Canterbury Public Library.
Throughout her career, Margaret Mahy received numerous literary honors including the 2006 Hans Christian Andersen Award, the 2003 New Zealand Post Children’s Book Award, and the 2005 Phoenix Award.
Mahy grew up with her four younger siblings in Whakatane, New Zealand. Later on she settled in Canterbury with her two daughters whom she raised alone.
