About Margaret Dumont
Margaret Dumont, born on October 20th, 1882 in New York City, was a renowned movie actress. She gained fame for her roles in various Marx Brothers films, particularly for her comedic interactions with Groucho Marx in Duck Soup (1933) and The Big Store (1941). Additionally, she had a successful career as a stage actress and appeared on Broadway in two early Marx Brothers productions: The Cocoanuts (1925) and Animal Crackers (1928).
Before her rise to stardom, Dumont made her stage debut in the 1902 Chestnut Theater production of Beauty and the Beast. Her silver screen debut occurred in the silent film A Tale of Two Cities in 1917.
Intriguingly, Dumont displayed her versatility by portraying Shirley MacLaine‘s character’s mother in her final film What a Way to Go!
She hailed from New York City as the daughter of Harriet and William Baker before being adopted by Joel Chandler Harris during most of her childhood spent primarily in the southern United States. In 1910 she married John Moller Jr., which lasted until his passing away eight years later.
