About Margaret Chase Smith
Margaret Chase Smith was an American politician born on December 14, 1897, in Maine. She served as a United States Senator from the late 1940s to the early 1970s and had previously been a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Before entering politics, Smith worked as a teacher and high school basketball coach after graduating from high school. Her political career began in the 1930s when she joined the Maine Republican State Committee.
In addition to her accomplishments in Congress, Smith made history by becoming the first woman to have her name placed in nomination for the presidency during a major party’s convention when she ran for the Republican primary nomination in the 1964 United States presidential election.
Born into a family with English and French-Canadian heritage, Smith married fellow politician Clyde Smith and had five younger siblings who were also born in Maine.
