About Mae Jemison
Mae Jemison, born on October 17, 1956 in Decatur, Alabama, is an American astronaut. On September 12, 1992, she made history by becoming the first African-American woman to journey into space aboard the Endeavour as part of the STS-47 mission.
Before embarking on her career as an astronaut, Jemison had a passion for both science and the arts. She particularly loved dance and pursued degrees in chemical engineering, African studies and African-American studies at Stanford University before obtaining her medical degree from Cornell University.
In addition to her groundbreaking achievements in space exploration, Jemison also served in the Peace Corps from 1985 to 1987. In a noteworthy appearance reflecting her interest in both art and science, she appeared on Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1993.
Jemison was born to Dorothy Green and Charlie Jemison.
