About Lynda Barry
Lynda Barry is an American cartoonist born on January 2, 1956, in Wisconsin. She is best known for her Ernie Pook’s Comeek comic strip and has authored several graphic and illustrated novels including Cruddy (1999), One! Hundred! Demons! (2002), and What It Is (2008). In 2009, she was awarded the Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Comic Work.
Barry earned a Fine Arts degree from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. Her work The Good Times Are Killing Me, published in 1998, explores themes of friendship between children of different races and was adapted into an Off-Broadway play in the early 1990s.
She grew up in Wisconsin and Washington as the daughter of a Filipina-Irish mother and a Norwegian-Irish father. After marrying naturalist Kevin Kawula, she settled on a Wisconsin dairy farm.
