Lydia Taft, born on February 2nd, 1712 in Massachusetts, is best known for her role as an activist and for securing a place in history as the first woman to legally vote in America. This significant accomplishment paved the Way for early women’s suffrage.
Taft’s groundbreaking vote was related to the landowner and taxpayer status of her late husband’s estate. This historic moment took place in 1756.
Before achieving this milestone, Lydia Taft married Josiah Taft, who served as a Lieutenant and later Captain in the French and Indian War, in 1731.
In recognition of her contribution to American history and gender equality, Route 146A in Massachusetts that leads to Rhode Island has been named after her.
Lydian and Josiah had eight children: Josiah, Ebenezer, Caleb, Asahel, Joel (Two with this name), Bazaleel ,and Chloe.
