About Lydia De Vega
Lydia De Vega (born December 12, 1964) is a former Filipino sprinter known for her incredible speed on the track. She was born in Meycauayan, Bulacan, Philippines and made a name for herself as the fastest female runner in Asia during the 1980s.
De Vega’s athletic prowess was showcased through various wins, including gold medals in the 100-meter dash events at the New Delhi Asiad of 1982 and the Seoul Asiad of 1986. She also secured victories at three Southeast Asian Games (in 1987,’91, and ’93) and two Asian Athletics Championships.
She burst onto the scene by winning both the 200 and 400-meter races at the SEA Games of 1981. De Vega went on to represent her country in international competitions such as the Olympic Games in both 1984 and ’88.
After retiring from competition as an athlete, she transitioned into coaching school sports based in Singapore. De Vega stemmed from an athletic background with her father Francisco De Vega serving as her coach throughout her career. Her personal life includes a tragic loss when her son John Michael passed away at just four years old
