About Lydia Cabrera
Lydia Cabrera was a Cuban author, poet, Afro-Cuban anthropologist and activist known for her 1954 work El Monte. Born on May 20, 1899 in Cuba, she was one of eight children from a wealthy and socially prominent Havana family.
Before gaining fame as an activist, Cabrera moved to Paris in 1927 where she lived for eleven years while studying art. Throughout her career, she wrote several works about the secretive Abakua sect, an Afro-Cuban religious group.
