About Lucy Mack Smith
Lucy Mack Smith was a 19th-century memoirist born on July 8, 1775, in Gilsum, New Hampshire. She is best known for her work “The History of Joseph Smith by His Mother,” published in 1853, which provides a detailed account of the life of her famous son.
Prior to achieving literary recognition, Lucy was born to Solomon Mack in New Hampshire and grew up surrounded by the legacy of her father’s service in the Revolutionary War. Despite facing challenges such as tuberculosis, she relied on her strong religious faith to overcome adversity.
In 1796, Lucy married Joseph Smith, Sr., with whom she had ten children – including their renowned offspring, Joseph Smith Jr., who would go on to become the founder of Mormonism.
