About Lucy Higgs Nichols
Lucy Higgs Nichols, born on April 10, 1838, in Tennessee, was an activist known for her role as a beloved Union Army nurse after escaping slavery. She became affectionately referred to as “Aunt Lucy.” Despite being born into slavery in Hardeman County, Tennessee, she went on to gain honorary membership in the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union Army veterans. Sadly, both her first husband and daughter died during the Civil War. Following the war and the Emancipation Proclamation, she settled in Indiana and married John Nichols.
In recognition of her remarkable life story and contributions as a nurse during the Civil War, exhibits at both Indiana’s Carnegie Center for Art & History and Kentucky’s Frazier History Museum have celebrated her legacy.
