About Lucretia Garfield
Lucretia Garfield, born on April 19, 1832 in Garrettsville, Ohio, was the wife of James A. Garfield and served as the First Lady of the United States in 1881. During her time in the White House, she contracted malaria and tragically witnessed her husband’s assassination by an assassin.
Prior to fame, Lucretia was a devout member of the Churches of Christ and met James while they were classmates during their early education. Notably, she also taught education while James attended Williams College.
Lutrecia married James in 1858 after meeting as classmates at Geauga Seminary in Chester, Ohio ten years before. Together they had four sons and one daughter.
