About Lucille Clifton
Lucille Clifton (born June 27, 1936 in Depew, New York) is an African-American poet and author known for her poetry collections such as Good Times and Blessing the Boats. In addition to her poetry, she is recognized for her Everett Anderson series and children’s books including Three Wishes and The Lucky Stone. Clifton initially studied at Howard University on a scholarship but faced challenges with low grades before transferring to the State University of New York at Fredonia. Interestingly, she was born with six fingers on each hand, a trait shared by other women in her family – she had these extra digits removed during childhood.
She married artist and professor Fred James Clifton in 1958 after they acted together in a community theatrical production of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie.
