Lucille Bridges, born on August 12, 1934 in Tylertown, Mississippi, was a prominent civil rights leader known for her pivotal role in the integration of William Frantz Elementary School. In 1960, she bravely advocated for her daughter Ruby Bridges to enroll at the previously all-white school in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Hailed as one of the mothers of the Civil Rights Movement in New Orleans by then-mayor LaToya Cantrell in 2020, Lucille Bridges made significant contributions to desegregation efforts. Born to sharecroppers in Mississippi, she became a symbol of resilience and activism during a challenging time.
Lucille Bridges tragically passed away in November 2020 but leaves behind an impactful legacy that has been acknowledged and celebrated. She played an integral part during a crucial period in American history and has been recognized for her monumental efforts through various tributes and recognitions including being featured at the National Women’s History Museum.
