Lovie Austin, born on September 19, 1887, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was an influential bandleader, session musician, and arranger during the classic blues period of the 1920s. She is best known for her collaboration with Alberta Hunter on the classic song ‘Down Hearted Blues.’
Before gaining recognition as a composer, Lovie Austin played piano in vaudeville and performed with variety acts. She also became known for her fashion sense and owned a Stutz Bearcat.
One of her notable achievements includes co-writing the classic ‘Down Hearted Blues’ with Alberta Hunter. This song became a hit for singer Bessie Smith in 1923.
Born Cora Calhoun in Chattanooga, she later decided to settle in Chicago around 1923. It was here that she spent the rest of her life and career.
