About Louise Bogan

Louise Bogan was an American poet, translator, and literary critic known for her works such as “Body of This Death” and “Dark Summer.” She was born on August 11, 1897 in Maine. Bogan attended Boston University but left after a year to marry a United States Army corporal.

She went on to become the fourth United States Poet Laureate in 1945 and during the 1930s she worked as a poetry editor for The New Yorker. Her first marriage ended after two years and she later married writer Raymond Holden; however, this marriage also ended in divorce after twelve years.
