Louise Beavers was a prominent movie actress known for her roles in films such as Imitation of Life and Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Born on March 8, 1900, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she appeared in over 100 films during her career, typically cast as a maid, servant, nanny, or slave.
Beavers is best remembered for embodying the “mammy” role, a racist trope prevalent in early American cinema. Her contribution to the history of cinema is significant due to the impact of this portrayal.
Prior to gaining fame as an actress, Beavers graduated from Pasadena High School and initially worked as an assistant for Hollywood star Leatrice Joy.
In recognition of her contributions to film history and African American representation on screen, she was posthumously inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1976.
Beavers married Leroy Moore in 1952 and remained with him until her passing.
