About Louisa Lawson
Louisa Lawson was an influential Australian poet, author, activist, and publisher born on February 17, 1848. She is best known for her work “The Lonely Crossing” and for operating the feminist newspaper called The Dawn.
Before gaining fame as a writer and activist, Louisa Lawson was one of twelve children born to Harriet Winn and Henry Albury. She ended her formal education at the age of thirteen.
In 1889, Louisa created The Dawn Club – an organization that fought for the suffrage of Australian women. In addition to her literary and advocacy work, she also founded a family; marrying Norwegian sailor Niels Larsen in 1866 with whom she had two daughters (one sadly dying in infancy) and three sons. One of her sons, Henry Lawson went on to become an acclaimed poet and writer.
