About Lorraine Hansberry
Lorraine Hansberry was an American playwright born in Chicago, Illinois on May 19, 1930. She is best known for being the first African-American to write a Broadway play. Her most famous work, A Raisin in the Sun, debuted on Broadway in 1959.
Before gaining fame as a playwright, she worked on Henry A. Wallace’s presidential campaign at the age of 18 and later studied painting at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico.
In addition to her groundbreaking contributions to theater, Hansberry was posthumously inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 2013. She was married to Robert Nemiroff from 1953 until 1962.
