About Lois Mailou Jones
Lois Mailou Jones was an American painter born on November 3, 1905, in Massachusetts. She gained prominence as an artist during the Harlem Renaissance and became the only African-American female painter to achieve international fame in the 1930s and 1940s.
Prior to her rise as a painter, Jones took classes at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and subsequently worked in costume design. Notably, she was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in London during the early 1960s.
Jones hailed from a family where her father worked as a building superintendent and lawyer while her mother pursued a career as a cosmetologist.
