About Liz Claiborne
Liz Claiborne, born on March 31, 1929 in Belgium, was a renowned entrepreneur and the first woman to lead a Fortune 500 company. She founded Liz Claiborne Inc., a women’s clothing business that achieved over twenty million dollars in sales within its initial two years.
By 1981, her company had amassed more than one billion dollars in sales. Before attaining success with her own venture, she won Harper’s Bazaar’s Jacques Heim National Design Contest at age twenty and subsequently worked for various fashion houses and designers in Manhattan.
Claiborne was known not only for her contributions to the fashion industry but also for her philanthropy after retiring. She supported several environmental foundations and funded PBS’s Nature series. Born into an American family with Louisiana roots but raised primarily in Maryland, USA,Claiborne had two marriages – her second lasting from 1957 until her death from cancer in 2007.
