About Lisa Lyon
Lisa Lyon was an iconic figure model and pivotal figure in the world of female bodybuilding. Born on November 11, 1952, in Los Angeles, California, she made history by winning the first-ever Women’s World Pro Bodybuilding Championship in 1979.
Viewed as a performance artist, Lyon saw her body as a “moving sculpture.” Her collaboration with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe produced the groundbreaking visual narrative “Lady: Lisa Lyon,” presenting an unparalleled portrayal of the female form.
Before her rise to fame in bodybuilding, Lyon attended UCLA where she studied Japanese fencing or “kendo.” Seeking to improve her upper body strength for the sport, she began weight training and eventually made her professional bodybuilding debut at the AAU Junior Ms. America competition.
In addition to her athletic achievements, Lyon authored a weight training book for women titled “Lisa Lyon’s Body Magic” and was posthumously honored with induction into the IFBB Hall of Fame for promoting bodybuilding through art and media relations.
Lyon briefly married French singer-songwriter Bernard Lavilliers from 1982 to 1983 before passing away at age 70 after receiving hospice care for stomach cancer on September 8, 2023.
