About Lili Elbe
Lili Elbe was a Danish activist born on December 28, 1882, in Vejle, Denmark. She is renowned for being one of the first individuals to undergo sex reassignment surgery, transitioning from male to female. It is believed that she may have been born intersex.
Prior to her fame as Lili Elbe, known as Einar Wegener at birth, she enjoyed a successful career as a painter. In 1904, she married Gerda Gottlieb and the couple moved to Paris where they could live openly according to their true identities.
The year 1930 marked Elbe’s groundbreaking sex reassignment surgery which was considered extremely experimental at the time. Tragically, following complications from a uterine transplant associated with further procedures related to her transition process, Lili passed away in 1931.
Following her transition and legal recognition as a woman, Elbe’s marriage to Gottlieb was annulled. Subsequently entering into a relationship with Claude Lejeune shortly before passing away.
