About Lila Downs
Lila Downs, born on September 9, 1968, in Tlaxiaco, Mexico, is a Mexican traditional and pop musician. She gained recognition for her first commercially successful album, La Sandunga, released in 1999.
Prior to her fame, she started her career by singing with mariachis at a young age. In addition to her music career, she has also worked as a store clerk in the Mixtec mountains where she once translated a death certificate for a man which revealed that his son had tragically drowned while attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border. Downs often referenced this incident as an inspiration for her work.
She shares parental responsibilities with her partner Paul Cohen and together they adopted a child named Benito Dxuladi in 2010.
