About Leila Khaled
Leila Khaled, born on April 9, 1944 in Haifa, Israel, is a Palestinian political figure and member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. She gained notoriety after being convicted of hijacking an airliner in 1970. Prior to her involvement in politics, she attended Medical School in Beirut before carrying out her first plane hijacking in 1969.
Khaled is often considered the “Poster Girl” for Palestinian Militancy and was released from prison as part of a prisoner exchange for civilian hostages who had been kidnapped by her fellow PFLP members. Her family fled to Lebanon during the 1948 Palestinian Exodus.
