Leelah Alcorn, born Joshua Ryan Alcorn on November 15, 1997 in Kings Mills, Ohio, was an American transgender teen who tragically committed suicide at the age of 17. She cited the lack of societal support for transgender individuals as a contributing factor in her decision to end her life.
A year before her death, Leelah asked her parents for permission to medically transition from male to female, but instead was subjected to conversion therapy against her will.
Following her untimely passing, the Transgender Human Rights Institute advocated for ‘Leelah’s Law,’ which aimed to enforce a federal ban on conversion therapy for transgender people.
She grew up in Ohio with three siblings and belonged to a deeply religious family that attended Cincinnati’s Northeast Church of Christ. Sadly, Leelah’s parents refused to acknowledge and accept their daughter’s gender identity.
