About Leah Purcell
Leah Purcell, born on August 14, 1970, in Murgon, Australia, is a movie and TV actress and director. She is best known for her roles in films such as Lantana and The Drovers Wife, which she also wrote. Additionally, she gained recognition for her work on the TV show Wentworth.
Purcell directed and wrote Black Chicks Talking, a documentary that later became a book and art exhibit. This production earned her a 2002 Inside Film award. Before gaining fame, Purcell had a challenging upbringing as one of seven children of Aboriginal and white Australian descent. Her experiences inspired her to move to Brisbane where she joined the community theater.
In 2021, Purcell was honored as a Member of the Order of Australia at the Queen’s Birthday Honours for significant service in the arts. She is married to Bain Stewart with whom she has a daughter and two grandchildren.
