Lea DeLaria, born on May 23, 1958 in Belleville, Illinois, is a comedian known for making waves as the first openly gay comic to appear on a late night talk-show with her 1993 appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show. Among her accomplishments includes her recurring role as prison inmate Carrie “Big Boo” Black on Netflix’s hit show Orange Is the New Black, which began in 2013. Additionally, she played Ms. Bruntford in the 2013 TV movie Dear Dumb Diary.
Prior to fame, she attended St. Mary’s Elementary School in Belleville and later went on to star in Broadway revivals of On the Town and The Rocky Horror Show.
Born as the daughter of Jerry and Robert DeLaria, Lea was engaged to fashion editor Chelsea Fairless from February 2015 until their separation in 2017.
