About Laurel Clark
Laurel Clark was born on March 10, 1961, in Ames, Iowa. She was an astronaut and a crew member of the ill-fated Columbia space shuttle which tragically broke up above Texas during reentry into Earth’s atmosphere.
Prior to her career as an astronaut, she studied zoology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before earning a medical degree. Her husband Jonathan Clark served as a captain in the U.S. Navy.
In recognition of her contributions and sacrifice, an asteroid and several planetary landmarks were named in her honor. Additionally, an auditorium at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland bears her name.
