About Laura Esquivel
Laura Esquivel, born on September 30, 1950 in Mexico City, Mexico, is a Mexican novelist and politician. She gained fame for her debut novel “Like Water for Chocolate” in 1989. Among her other published works are “The Law of Love” (1996) and “Malinche” (2006). In 2012, she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in Mexico.
Esquivel began her career as a teacher and ran a children’s theater group before gaining recognition as a writer. Her literary works also include “Between Two Fires” (2000) and “Tan Veloz Como el Deseo” (2001).
She grew up in Mexico with three siblings and was married to actor/director Alfonso Arau from 1975 to 1995.
