Laura Bridgman (December 21, 1829 – January 24, 1889) was an American woman who holds the distinction of being recognized as the first deaf-blind child in American history to receive meaningful formal education in the English language. Born in New Hampshire, she gained worldwide renown after author Charles Dickens wrote admiringly about her in his book “American Notes” published in 1842.At the age of two, Bridgman lost her sight and hearing due to scarlet fever. She began learning sign language from family friend Asa Tenney. Later on, she went on to teach young blind girls how to sew at the Perkins School for the Blind.Bridgman’s siblings included sisters Mary and Collina, as well as a brother named Addison.
