Laura Ashley (1925-09-07) was a Welsh entrepreneur and fashion and furniture designer known for her romantic, nineteenth-century style and use of non-synthetic materials. Born in Dowlais, Wales, she started as a secretary and later designed quilts and scarves after serving in the Women’s Royal Naval Service during World War II.Her fashion design company initially operated under the name Ashley Mountney, combining her married and maiden names. However, it was later re-named Laura Ashley at the suggestion of her husband. Raised by Baptist parents in England and Wales, she went on to marry engineer Bernard Ashley with whom she had four children.Laura Ashley’s legacy continues to have an impact within the fashion industry through its timeless designs rooted in pastoral themes.
