About Laila Lalami
Laila Lalami is a Moroccan novelist born on February 24, 1968, in Rabat, Morocco. She is best known for her works “The Moor’s Account,” “The Other Americans,” and “Conditional Citizens: On Belonging in America.” Much of her writing focuses on historical fiction and essays that explore themes related to colonialism, class, and identity.
Before gaining recognition as a writer, Lalami pursued her education at Mohammed V University in Rabat before obtaining an MA in Linguistics from University College London. Her literary career took off with the publication of her first book, a collection of short stories titled “Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits” in 2005.
Lalami has received notable acclaim for her work. Her novel “The Moor’s Account” was a finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction and won the 2015 American Book Awards. Additionally, “The Other Americans” was shortlisted for the 2019 National Book Award for Fiction and received the prestigious 2019 Joyce Carol Oates Prize.
Currently residing with her husband and cat in Portland, Oregon but originally hailing from Morocco where she studied at university prior to moving to Los Angeles in 1992.
