About Laika
Laika was a famous dog credited with being the first animal in history to orbit the Earth. Born on January 11, 1954, in Moscow, Russia, she was taken in by the Soviet space program when she was just around two years old after living as a stray on the streets of Moscow.
She was conditioned to survive in tight spaces and low gravity before flying aboard the Sputnik 2 which launched on November 3, 1957. Unfortunately, Laika was not expected to survive and subsequently died of overheating a few hours into orbit.
Laika has since been commemorated with a statue at the Russian Cosmonaut Training Facility in Moscow. She had no owners or family.
