About Laerte Coutinho
Laerte Coutinho, born on June 10, 1951, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is a prominent cartoonist known for her work in creating comic strips. She gained recognition through her contributions to Brazil’s underground comic scene of the 1980s and is renowned for notable strips such as Piratas do Tiete and Los Tres Amigos.
Prior to gaining fame as a cartoonist, Coutinho completed a free drawing course at Fundacao Armando Alvares Penteado in 1968. Although she began studying journalism at the University of Sao Paolo, she did not finish her degree.
Coutinho has contributed comic strips to magazines including Chiclete com Banana, Geraldao, and Circo. Additionally, she served as a screenwriter for comedy shows such as TV Pirata and Sai de Baixo.
Her family includes her son Rafael who also works as a cartoonist. In addition to being well-known for her artistic talents, Coutinho publicly came out as transgender in 2010.
