About Lady Jane Grey
Lady Jane Grey (1537-01-01) was an English noblewoman who briefly held the throne of England and Ireland from July 10 to July 19, 1553. She earned the nickname “Nine Days’ Queen” for her short reign, which was part of an unsuccessful attempt to prevent the accession of Mary I of England (Mary Tudor), a Catholic. Along with her husband, she was executed by Mary I for high treason in the following year.
Before coming to power, Lady Jane Grey received a humanist education that included studying Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and Italian. Due to her father’s influence and that of her tutors, she became a committed Protestant.
Initially pardoned by Mary I and imprisoned in the Tower of London after her brief reign, Lady Jane Grey ultimately faced execution as she came to be seen as a threat to the throne.
Born in Leicester, England as the eldest daughter of Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Suffolk and Frances Brandon, Lady Jane Grey also had familial ties through being the great-granddaughter of Henry VII and a first cousin once removed from Edward VI. In May 1553 she married Guildford Dudley.
