LaChanze is a stage actress born in St. Augustine, Florida on December 16, 1961. She gained recognition for her role as Celie in the Broadway musical production of The Color Purple, for which she won a Tony Award in 2006.
Prior to her successful career on Broadway, LaChanze attended the University of Arts in Philadelphia where she majored in dance and theater.
In addition to her stage work, LaChanze has appeared on television shows such as Sex and the City, Law & Order: SVU, and The Cosby Show.
She married Derek Fordjour in 2005 and their daughter Celia Rose Gooding also followed into acting.
