Kim Davis (born September 17, 1965) is a politician from Morehead, Kentucky, who gained national attention in 2015 as the County Clerk of Rowan County. She garnered headlines for refusing to comply with a federal court order requiring her to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Prior to her political career, Davis served as the chief deputy clerk of Rowan County from 1991 to 2015 and was affiliated with the Democratic party until switching allegiances in 2015.
In defiance of the Supreme Court’s ruling on issuing marriage licenses, she chose not to issue any licenses at all and was briefly jailed for contempt of court.
Davis has familial ties within her professional life; she worked under her mother Jean W. Bailey while serving as chief deputy clerk. Additionally, she has been married multiple times throughout her life.
