Kim Campbell is a Canadian politician, born on March 10, 1947, in Port Alberni, Canada. She made history as Canada’s first female Prime Minister in the summer of 1993 following the unexpected retirement of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. Prior to her political career, Campbell worked as a lawyer, university professor, diplomat, and writer.
Before entering politics, she was a host and reporter on CBC’s Junior Television Club. Known for her frank honesty during her time in office, some believe this attribute contributed to her loss in the fall 1993 election.
Campbell holds the distinction of being the only Prime Minister born in British Columbia. Her upbringing was marked by adversity; when she was 12 years old, her mother abandoned their family leaving Kim and her sister Alix to be raised by their father.
