About Kay Ivey
Kay Ivey, born on October 15, 1944 in the United States, is an American politician and member of the Republican party. She currently serves as the 54th Governor of Alabama, having begun her term in 2017.
Prior to her role as Governor, Ivey served as State Treasurer from 2003 to 2011 and lieutenant governor from 2011 to 2017. She graduated from Auburn University and initially pursued a teaching career in California before returning to Alabama.
In addition to her political career, Ivey has worked as a high school teacher and was appointed by then-Governor Fob James to become a member of the state cabinet in 1979. Although she was unsuccessful in running for state auditor as a Democrat in 1982, she later made history as the second female governor of Alabama.
At the age of 77, Ivey holds the distinction of being the oldest sitting governor. Despite her accomplishments, she has faced controversy over a blackface skit during her time at Auburn University but later issued an apology.
