About Katina Paxinou
Katina Paxinou was a celebrated actress born on December 17, 1900, in Piraeus, Greece. She is best known for her role as Pilar in the 1943 film For Whom the Bell Tolls, which earned her both an Oscar and a Golden Globe. Before making waves in Hollywood, she received education as an opera singer and performed in the operatic production of “Sister Beatrice” before joining the Greek Royal Theater in 1929.
One interesting fact about Paxinou is that she not only starred in but also provided the Greek translation for the first Eugene O’Neill play to be performed in Greece, “Desire Under the Elms.”
Paxinou’s contribution to theater extended beyond her performances; she and her husband, Alexis Minotis, co-founded the Royal Theatre of Athens during the 1950s.
