About Kathrine Switzer
Kathrine Switzer, born on January 5, 1947 in Amberg, Germany, is a notable runner known for her memoir Marathon Woman published in 2007. She rose to fame in 1967 as the first registered female runner in the Boston Marathon. At that time, women were not allowed to compete in the race and she secured entry by signing up under the name “K.V. Switzer”.
Prior to her running career, Switzer earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from Syracuse University. In addition to her accolades at Boston Marathon, she was also the fastest woman in the New York City Marathon of 1974.
As a military child who spent her high school years in Northern Virginia after moving to her parents’ native United States at age two, Kathrine has had an eventful personal life. Her first marriage was to Tom Miller (who ran alongside her at the historic Boston Marathon). Later on, she married fellow writer and marathon runner Roger Robinson.
