About Katharine Lee Bates
Katharine Lee Bates (1859-08-12) was an American songwriter known for writing the lyrics to “America the Beautiful” and the poem “Goody Santa Claus on a Sleigh Ride” that popularized the image of Mrs. Santa Claus.
She was born in Falmouth, Massachusetts and graduated from Wellesley College in 1880, later serving as a full professor of English literature at the same institution.
Bates never married but had a close relationship with Katharine Coman, a teacher with whom she lived. She was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
