About Kate Smurthwaite
Kate Smurthwaite, born on December 9, 1975 in London, England, is a well-known comedienne and activist. She gained fame for her popular Edinburgh Festival Fringe show titled “The News at Kate” and went viral for her feminist and atheist-tinged appearance on the BBC One program “The Big Questions” in 2010.
Prior to her career in comedy, Smurthwaite studied in the mathematics department at Lincoln College, Oxford University, and briefly worked in the financial industry. In 2004, she began performing as a stand-up comedienne and had success as a finalist in the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year contest in 2008.
By late 2014, she had amassed over 10,000 followers on her ‘cruella1’ Twitter account. Born in London but raised primarily in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England.
